You’re not on this site for me. But since you asked…
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1976. Son of an Immigration Officer and a Seamstress. Older brother to Alan, who introduced himself when I was 3. No other siblings, that I know of.
Went to school and learned a lot of things through until I was 13. Then followed up by learning even more stuff when I started to understand why. Average high school grades. Above average at sports.
Left home at 17. Bought first property at 18. Started first business at 19. Moved overseas and become a wanderer at 21. Since then lived more than half my life outside Scotland. Enjoyed good times in Barcelona, Paris, Dubai, Sydney, Tokyo and California. So far.
Shared first pizza with Sarah in January 2008. Bought her a toothbrush three months later. Said “I do” three years after that, in a 13th century Scottish castle. Amazing.
Piloted my first drone as a hobbyist in 2013. Joined DJI waiting list for a Mavic in 2015. Received order in 2016. Finally.
Welcomed daughter Elyse into the world in 2017. Welcomed second daughter Mirren in 2018. Yep, just 13 months later. Haven’t slept since. Now a smiling 44 years young at the time of writing.
Reviews On Drones
So the photo above? Yep, that’s me. I’m Dave, and about 6 years ago I fell in love with drones when a few friends and I bought our first ‘toys’ to have some fun with.
But it was early in 2017 when someone with absolutely zero experience asked me what drone I’d recommend he buy and could I teach him how to fly it, that my focus really changed.
You see, that whole experience of taking someone with zero knowledge about drones through to being a competent pilot, taught me three things:
#1. that I knew a stack more about drones than I thought I did (and was passionate enough about the industry to research and learn answers to the things I didn’t know, to make sure my friend was getting the very best advice I could give him).
#2. that I actually LOVED sharing my knowledge and experiences with others… to see them go from holding a controller and taking to the skies for the first time, to receiving a video message of their latest drone video footage from somewhere exotic… for me it’s just the best feeling.
#3. that there is an abundance of information on drones out there, but sadly, much of it is driven by people trying to make commissions offering up advice that benefits them and not the reader.
Side note: I do acknowledge that’s not everyone, and credit should go to those who are making our beautiful hobby a much better place. And if you’re reading this, you know who you are. Keep up the amazing work!
Personally, I’ve spent hundreds of hours in the air – exploring, free-styling and racing – and learned from my own first-hand experiences what drones work and what don’t, and how best to get the most out of my time in the sky.
And so, Reviews On Drones was born… technically in 2013 but officially in 2017… with the intention of sharing everything I’ve learned about drones (that journey never stops), especially for beginners and with a focus on what to buy, how to buy, and how to get the best from your time in the air… all whilst delivering the most truthful, helpful, and the most accurate information possible.
Oh and this site doesn’t exist without SIX humans and SEVEN cats. Thanks to each of you for your continued support and patience in listening to me constantly talk about drones!
